Task 2

Behind the Scenes

What we Used for Foley

  • Celery - To replace the lobster being eating, by snapping celery you get a very similar sound to the shell of the lobster snapping

  • Voice acting - We had to recreate the audio for what the actors says and sound effects such as gulping so we recorded me and Matt saying or doing what the actors said or did.

  • Wet paper - To create the wet squishing sounds by dampening a peace of paper and crunching it up within your hand which makes the squishing sounds we needed

  • piano - We used the piano and Matthews knowledge of how to play to create the music during the ending.

  • Paper - We recorded a peace of paper being scrunched up to have the effects of Mr Beans clothing

  • Chairs - When Mr Bean races out of the restaurant he gets up from his chair so we recorded audio of a chair being scrapped against the floor and the chair being shaken around.

  • Foot steps - We recorded Shelly walking around the music studio in order to get  the sounds of footsteps.

  • Phone - We had to create the audio for the phone call so we went into the music studio to reduce the sounds of echos and recorded our phones as we rang one another.

The video above is a behind the scenes documentary of me, Shelly and Matthew doing the Foley project for college, Our project is to make the audio for a scene of Mr Bean, We had to take away the original audio and create our own audio and add it into the video. We originally couldn't get a Tascam or a microphone so for the first day of filming we had to use a camera and use it's microphone and our phones but we decided not to use those pieces of footage and re-did it the next day. The next day we decided to film the rest of the audio but we didn't have access to a working Tascam so we used a Sony sound box instead to record the audio. We decided to film in the music studio because it's quiet and we were told it's sound proof and didn't have many echos within the music video studio. For the cutlery sounds and the back ground noises we decided to film in the restaurant area of the college so we could have a more realistic sounds to what you would hear in the restaurant. Something we filmed that didn't make it into the documentary was when we were breaking celery. We did this in a quiet room where our lectures give feed back to us. We decided to film within their so we can break the celery quietly. Because the music studio was busy of the time of filming.

Editing

When we gathered all of the footage we needed we started to edit the final project together. We started by finding the footage of Mr Bean from the link Julian gave us but that wouldn't let us download the footage because of an error we didn't understand so we decided to find it on YouTube to download it from, We were allowed to use copyright free music for the classical music in the background but at the end their was a different type of music for Mr Beans getaway, so we recorded Matthew playing the Piano to add in at the end. The rest of the ending we did in bits, such as I did the ring tone, scream etc, Mathew did the Mr bean sounds, French man talking etc and Shelly did the sounds of the cutlery, other Mr Bean sounds, etc. We did it so we did an even amount but we also made sure everyone was okay with what we were doing by asking each other to go over what we have done already. Matthews scream at the end was challenging to edit because it sounded very fake, so we re-filmed it, raised the pitch and cut down the footage so the scream will suit it more.

The video above is a behind the scene video that we didn't manage to get it the documentary about behind the scenes with me creating the audio for the lobster being eaten. We used celery because the crackling and crunching  of the celery sounds very similar to the shell snapping.

The image to the left of this text is our notes we made while filming, we write down on our phones what sounds we needed to get filmed and went through the list one by one and ticked them off as we went a long. We were in the studio playing the original footage with sound back as we went through the video we stopped any time Mr Bean said anything and repeated back afterwards, doing around 2 to 3 takes for each one.
