Task One
These above are two places where I could get work/experience within film making and media. The one on the left is indeed and is a job searching website. I can type what type of job I want and my area and it will mostly likely appear. I searched for production jobs in somerset area and got a whole page of results. You can type in for editing jobs and directing jobs as well and can have a smaller area to work in. If I wanted to keep my job local I can search for my home town. They also have qualifications needed for certain jobs or apprenticeships. These qualification can be certain years of experience or experience with software. The qualification can also be questions to find out more about yourself and can ask for your favorite move and why to see your ability to analyse and my knowledge on the subject matter they want me to do. It is really easy to go in and find a job, either for just experience or for a full time job. The image on the right is a production company called Crypt TV. They except short horror movies and also apprenticeships. The apprenticeships are used to gain experience while sending them short horror movies is a way of making money. Both however can lead to a full time job with them, i only mention it because this is the company I am interested in working with in the future. I can also get into work by word of mouth as well. If I know people who are musicians or own their own business I can get into work by working with them. University is another route I can take, by getting a distinction and two merits I should be to go to university but money will be difficult and I will be planning on getting ready and making my decision next year at the latest. But with money being a problem I will be trying to get a job in order to afford it or take out a student loan which I am worried about getting into debut so I'm not certain if university is the route I will be taking but doing a course at uni will allow me to get a better qualification and allows me to improve my pro-folio.
Task Two
Research Into Jobs
Researching into Jobs you can enter the industry from a number of different areas. You can enter it from your local area, by doing small jobs with people. Such as making a promo video for anyone who owns their own business or making a music video for someone who is a musician. Work of mouth is a way you can pick up business but is very unreliable for a source of in come but within a small community Its a way of making a small amount of business but is unreliable and is difficult to get into. But there are other ways of getting into the industry. An apprenticeship at a production company such as channel 4 and the BBC. Applying for a BBC or Channel 4 is away to get in within the industry but there are draw backs to this. You won't necessarily get a place or a paying role, so you'll have to start from the bottom and move up from their which will take years. If you start their you will be expected to stay their for multiple years. Its a long term commitment but they can be used to get early experience or if you are going for a long term commitment then you can work your way up.
Indeed is a job searching website where you can find any type of job in any location. For an example is that I typed in for jobs within England, the location can be smaller. Such as your home county or home town. But keeping the area large is good because you have more of a chance to find a job. You can also set it so you are notified if their are any new jobs within the area you named. You can also type what job you want so in the picture next to this text I was looking for a camera operator job. But you can look for editing jobs, directing or any other job within the industry. You can then apply for the job but certain jobs will ask for different types of experience such as grades, years of experience or a good portfolio.
Sound cloud is another way to get into the industry by getting your name across. You can look through peoples music or discover new artist and you're able to message them through this site. For an example I was able to find and message multiple different artists about letting me make them a music video and while they don't reply straight away this gives you time to find and locate more artists. You can get in contact with anyone around the world to help spread your name out further but you aren't compelled to go towards them for the sake of filming, it does help but depending on what your vision of the film is its not necessary. You can also find musicians through other social media such as facebook and instagram which goes very similar to if you were to do it on this site but on a different platform.
BFI is the British film industry, they can help film makers to make new films, they help to fund and produce them. A number of new film makers and old film makers can get the funds to make a film of their own vision or have the BFI to be a major producer within the film. While this isn't necessarily isn't the best way of getting a job within the industry because the chance of getting green lighted isn't the most reliable way of making money. It is seen more of a way of expressing yourself through film or getting your idea or vision onto a screen. After you make the video you can upload them up to Vimeo, a website where films are uploaded onto, take them to a film convention to enter them within contest to see if you can win a prize or have your name spread out further to get more of a reputation. You can upload them to youtube which has a chance of making money but isn't a reliable source of income. You can also do all three of these and have more of a chance to make a profit.
YouTube has created a number of new job opportunists within the industry. Such as a lot of professional and new you-tubers are looking for editors to edit their videos. While a lot of you tubers do edit their own videos a lot of them who either can't afford editing software or don't have the time to edit. Their are also jobs going through digital design such as making thumb nails for videos or images within videos. YouTube is another way to get into the industry, especially if you edit your own videos. Their are channels who make small films on YouTube such as "and you films" and "crypt tv" who you can apply for or make your own videos in a chnannel like these. YouTube is easy to start because you only need an idea to start it, but hard to become popular on it. Its also not as reliable as other ways of getting into the industry or at making a profit.
There are a number of different ways of getting into the industry, depending on what you want to do such as for script writing you will most likely be working independently and will be trying to reach production companies with ideas or scripts. Indeed is another way of finding job opportunists for new and old script writers. If you are looking for an editors job you can look for them on indeed or could get in contact with a YouTuber to get editing jobs or look on social media. In order to become a creator you can look on "indeed", social media, including "soundcloud" (if you are interested in working on music videos.) and the BFI will help film makers to make their films by producing and funding them, this is away of getting into the industry but you do need to know about where to upload these films afterwards, such as youtube, film contest or vimeo. So in conclusion there are a number of different ways of getting into the industry some of which I don't know, I've learned that getting your name out there and spreading it out is the best way of finding work. I've found a number of ways of getting my name spread out there either for reliable or less reliable methods.
Task Two
My Roles and Responsibilities
My roles within tasks I have been doing in class work and other work has been mostly, production and directory roles within my groups, I have been doing a lot of editing within my groups but editing isn’t something I want to get into within the industry but I do have responsibilities for when I have to edit, such as not being allowed to show footage of people who haven’t given me the rights or who have changed their minds. I can no longer have them within the film because we don’t have the right to have them within it without their will so it’s an editor’s job to remove them from the film. I am also no too comfortable with experimenting with effects while editing. What I want to focus on more is directing, producing and script writing. Script writing, I have been writing the scripts for the work I have done so far. I feel comfortable while writing. I am comfortable with giving guide lines and creating a story. The stories I prefer to write about are mostly horror but are usually short films. I do have responsibilities within in script writing and creating the story. Such as responsibilities to make sure any subject matter used within it is suitable, such as if I was making a film about a true story I would have to make sure those people’s reputations and names are treated with respect to make sure they don’t get the audience confused with the fictional character and the real person. You also need to make sure it follows conventions so if it is mainly one genre or multiple it needs to show that through the story such as within a horror you’ll most likely contain a horror monster or a killer. A convention is something you will expect to see within a film to help the audience to know what genre it is. So, within writing the story to a film you will need to decide on the genre, so while writing and developing the rest of the story you’ll need to add in the conventions of the genre what suit the story most. For an example of this the story was horror and then had a car case within it the genre would either become, horror and action or horror with action theme. You will also need to take on suitable subject matter but taking on with subject such as murder and other elements will be needed to take on with responsibility and will be needed to be taken seriously and sensitively. You will also need to be aware of your clients need. For an example if you are working for a production company or a client, you will need to know what they want you to write. Such as if you are making script for a company such as “Blumhouse” they’ll be more likely to want you to write a horror story than any other such as if you were working for Disney you will have to take that companies ethics into an account, such as minimum violence and no smoking. This are the responsibilities within script writing I will have to know and understand these. Ways I can get into script writing from college is getting in contact with theatres and seeing if they are interested in having an already made script, getting in contact with the BFI. They will hear a proposal idea and where they can fund/ produce my idea or have you written a script for it. Indeed, is another way you can find script writing jobs and other writing jobs.
Production work is something I am interested in but I have just started to look into how to get into the industry. But I do end up taking production work in the groups I have worked in. I do go to other people with other skills and arrange them so that the people who are better at other skills are working where their skills will be most needed. I have gone out of my way to communicate between different apartments. Such as within my first project this year I made an anti-drug advert but I decided that having special effects such as scales and make up so I got in contact with someone studying special effects and had him helping and doing the special effects within my advert, which I felt improved my film and while doing augmented reality I talked to someone who studies psychology to talk about the use of colour psychology and if the content is suitable for the target audience. I feel confident talking to other departments about them helping within my videos and I feel like I’m confident on taking charge within a group on deciding on what everyone is doing and what everyone will be best at doing. But this role does have responsibilities such making sure everyone is happy and comfortable where they are working. Such as if a major incident has happened I will have to make sure people are comfortable doing what is required if not then a compromise will have to be made. Also, if people feel they are doing the wrong thing and are not able to meet the requirements then that will need to be understood. With my first project and the special effects I needed to be aware and know the capabilities of what he can do such as I can expect things above what I know he is capable of. Also, with casting or getting people to help I should be aware they have the right and ability to drop out of the project so I shouldn’t plan everything around this one person and should always have a backup plan just as a pro caution. Ways I can get into the industry through this is by going on Indeed and looking for jobs that way, also getting in contact with BFI about them funding/producing a movie and I can work on it by doing production. Another way is looking on “linkedin” for a job within production but you need to be aware that you’ll have to know a lot of people within the industry for this to work or for your existing work to be at a great level.
Directing is another role I do a lot within my groups and this has a lot of responsibilities but is the role I enjoy most out of all of the roles I take up while working. During this role you are expected to direct the film with your vision of how it’ll become. Your responsibility is to guide the film, such as what special effects, if any and within your film and how will they be used. This is the same for all aspects of the film such as the sound, the cinematography and how the actors perform. So how the film, will look and feel is to do with the directors choice. He has the final word within what happens to the film. So the responsibility of how the film will end up I to do with the choices of a director and their vision. They also have responsibilities to the studio to make sure it’s to their standard and applies by their rules as well to make sure not to damage the studios image; it also needs to be up to the studios standards to make sure the studio makes a profit from the project and the studios reputation is kept intact as well. Ways you can get within the industry is by going onto indeed and linkedin and can get in contact with client through these methods. BFI is another way for you to have a film to direct. But this isn’t as reliable as other methods. In conclusion I have shown how I understand my responsibilities within my roles I end up taking within my groups and what roles I want to do within the future.
